Tourism in the Vitebsk region: How to develop an experience economy
12-December-2025
This topic was proposed for discussion at the Vitebsk Region Media Center.
Recently, the average age of people purchasing vouchers has become significantly younger. The demand for health and wellness services has also changed. "A healthy lifestyle is gaining popularity, and the number of people worldwide seeking anti-stress programs is growing, and these are now being provided by Vitebsk region health resorts," explained Olesya Chernaya, leading specialist at the Vitebsk Regional Office of the Republican Center for Health and Sanatorium-Resort Treatment of the Population.
The most important principle of health resort treatment is its comprehensiveness, i.e., the use of a variety of natural healing factors in combination with dietary therapy, physiotherapy, exercise therapy, drug therapy, and other methods. While maintaining the therapeutic function, health resorts are offering more variety in their patient programs. The duration of treatment and wellness courses is becoming more flexible.
Currently, the network of health resorts and health facilities in the Vitebsk region includes 18 health centers. In addition, 36 children's camps operate during the summer (including five sports and wellness camps).
The facilities at the health centers allow for the annual wellness of approximately 110,000 people. The owners of the health centers are committed to improving and strengthening their facilities. For example, over the past five years, facilities that meet the most modern requirements have been built and commissioned: a new building at the Zhemchuzhina Children's Rehabilitation and Health Center, a dormitory building at the Lettsy Sanatorium, a unique open-air spa complex at the Plissa Sanatorium, cottages at the Lesnye Ozera Sanatorium, and pre-construction work on a swimming pool at the Vetraz Children's Health Center.
Many sanatoriums are developing and implementing physiotherapy methods new to the republic, such as mineral therapy, oxygen therapy, and carboxytherapy. State-of-the-art equipment is being acquired to provide a wide range of wellness and beauty services. To improve the efficiency of health resort and spa facilities, ensure their stable operation, and maintain occupancy, flexible discount systems have been developed at the region's sanatoriums. Competitive pricing offers (discounts, promotions, and bonuses) are continually developed to attract vacationers.
Each sanatorium and spa facility has its own, regularly updated website with information on service prices, new services, treatment procedures, room amenities, Wi-Fi availability, etc. To increase the client base and website traffic, contextual advertising is conducted online and in search engines such as Yandex, Google, and Mail.ru. Social media groups with information about the sanatoriums' services have been created.
Significant growth has been observed in the first nine months of 2025: revenue from the sale of sanatorium and spa services increased by 18% (a growth rate of 118%), and service exports by 33% (a growth rate of 133%).
In the first nine months of 2025, more than 72,000 adults and children received treatment at health resorts in the Vitebsk region, and 17,500 children received treatment at 24-hour camps.
